Taurine, a sulfur-containing amino acid, plays a crucial role in canine health. As the pet food industry continues to evolve, understanding the dietary sources of taurine has become increasingly important. In recent years, grain-free (GF) diets have gained popularity among pet owners, with some manufacturers claiming that grains are unhealthy ingredients. However, what does this mean for our furry friends' taurine intake?

In 2017, grain-based (GB) dog foods accounted for over 40% of the market share in the United States. This trend is largely attributed to pet humanization, where owners seek products perceived as healthy and natural. A study published in investigated the effects of GB and GF diets on protein utilization and taurine status in healthy Beagle dogs.

Researchers fed 12 Beagles a grain-based diet containing sorghum, millet, and spelt, while another group received a grain-free diet made with potatoes, peas, and tapioca starch. The study found that the GB diet did not affect overall taurine status, but the GF diet may alter the composition of fecal bile acids.

Interestingly, dogs fed the GF diet excreted a higher proportion of primary bile acids compared to those on the GB diet. Furthermore, plasma taurine concentrations were greater in dogs fed the GF diet at days 14 and 28, suggesting that grain-free diets may have a positive impact on taurine metabolism.

The study also analyzed apparent crude protein digestibility and found no significant difference between the two diets. However, dogs fed the GF diet had lower apparent organic matter digestibility compared to those on the GB diet.
